An electron current, the flow of electrons, contributes to an electrical present considering that the electron "carries" negative electrical charge. However before, an electrical present is not necessarily an electron current.
The circulation of ions (either positively or negatively charged) likewise contributes to an electrical present in, for example, the electrolyte of an electrochemical cell.
As an aside, electricity is not similar to electrical current. From the Wikipedia post "Electricity":
