Home think from Abroad

Robert Browning (1812–89)

You are watching: Oh to be in england now that war is here

OH, to be in England now that April ’s there
And anyone wakes in England sees, some morning, unaware,
That the lowest boughs and also the brushwood sheaf
Round the elm-tree bole room in small leaf,
While the chaffinch sings top top the orchard bough        5
In England—now!

And after ~ April, when may follows
And the white-throat builds, and all the swallows!
Hark, whereby my blossom’d pear-tree in the hedge
Leans come the field and also scatters top top the clover        10
Blossoms and also dewdrops—at the bending spray’s edge—
That ’s the wise thrush: he sings each track twice over
Lest you have to think he never can re-capture
The very first fine fruit rapture!
And, despite the areas look rough through hoary dew,        15
All will be gay once noontide wakes anew
The buttercups, the tiny children’s dower,
Far brighter 보다 this gaudy melon-flower!
